The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (the Alliance) is looking for outstanding new Trustees to serve on its Board.
Next year in May, our current Chair - Martin Dinham - steps down from the Board after three terms (the maximum allowed) and Warren ‘Buck’ Buckingham takes over as Chair. A number of other Trustees will also be coming to the end of their respective terms in the period ahead.
With a re-brand and a new global strategy in the pipeline – we offer an exciting opportunity to join our international Board and help shape our work in the next phase of the Alliance’s evolution.
About the Alliance
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance is a global partnership of non-government organisations committed to community action on HIV, health and human rights. Our vision is a world without AIDS. Since 1994, the Alliance and its partners have supported over 3,000 projects, in over 40 countries, reaching millions of people and helping to ensure universal access to comprehensive HIV services.
However, our job is far from over and we are committed to a process of re-positioning ourselves and creating an Alliance that can work even more innovatively with the most marginalised populations, as an essential part of the global response to HIV.
The Alliance has an international secretariat (a registered charity in the UK) headed by an Executive Director and overseen by the Board of Trustees.
What are we looking for?
We expect all our Trustees to have a real interest in and appreciation of international development issues, including HIV, health and human rights; and experience of policy-making, influencing, evaluation and capacity building. A strong respect for the rights of people living with HIV and those most affected is essential, as is the ability to question intelligently, think strategically, debate and dialogue constructively, challenge rigorously, bring independence of thought and decide dispassionately.
Ideally, we wish to identify candidates with previous experience as a trustee or in a similar non-executive role, and we are in particular looking for experience in the following areas:
• Individuals with experience of fundraising and of broadening the funding base of an NGO beyond traditional donor assistance;
• Individuals with senior level governance or management experience in the public or private sector with a marketing / communications background.
• Individuals from complementary sectors with expertise in innovative cross-sectoral approaches to programming and fundraising, including from other diseases, social enterprises and/or data-driven solutions.
For this latest round of appointments, it would be particularly desirable if, in addition to one or more of the skills above, at least one of the new recruits had experience living or working in Asia; and another was currently living or working in the UK, with a good understanding of the UK civil society environment.
We attach importance to the gender and geographic balance of the Board of Trustees, and welcome applicants from HIV affected communities. Qualified people living with HIV are particularly encouraged to apply. We conduct our Board meetings in English.
These are unpaid appointments, but we do reimburse expenses to twice-yearly Board meetings in Brighton (UK) and to occasional meetings in the countries where the Alliance works. Trustees are appointed for an initial term of three years, but may be re-appointed for up to a further two terms.
